Brooks breaks record for calling timeouts in baseball
4/6/2011  9:35:48 PM

Although it took 5 years, Coach Brooks called time out for the 1434th time and beat Eduardo Sillehoutteo Jr. in Albany, NY to get the record for most timeouts by a Head Coach in Youth League games..averaging 1.22 timeuts per game (ugh..I mean half inning), he takes the feat..  Great job Brooks...

And The Thunder Rolls......
4/4/2011  2:18:46 PM

The Thunder swept their weekend schedule at Exchange. A hard fought battle against the Indians on Saturday saw them struggle at the plate but dominate on the mound for the close win. After the poor offensive showing Coach Sawyer had his team at the batting cage until after midnight post game. According to sources Coach Sawyer had considered benching anyone who didnt hit safely in Sunday's game.

The practice worked as Sunday against the Braves they put it all together winning 18-1. Every Thunder batter had a hit and Eli Sawyer had three big drives so we will never know if Coach Sawyer was serious about the benching. The win didn't solve all of the Thunder's problems. Vestavia Village has learned that Tom Cruise sent a cease and desist letter to the Thunder regarding the use of his likeness as the team avatar.

The philosophy of the program is to develop football fundamentals, encourage participation, and have fun playing the game.   Players registering for the OTM through Vestavia Rec Football portal will be placed on team based in Vestavia and may include players from other areas if necessary to achieve team parity.

In OTM, we will play standard 11 on 11 football.

Age groups

The league is open to 3rd through 6th graders.  Players play with their grade depending on the level of participation.  Last year 3rd and 4th grades were combined while the 5th and 6th grades had their own league.

1. When does the season start?

Practice starts around the first of August, the season starts after Labor Day. The season ends in early November with the championship games.

2. How is this recreational league different from community programs?

This league was established to meet a unique need and encourage participation in football. Playing time is required for all players and teams are generally smaller. Equal participation is more important than winning.

3. Where and when are the games played?

The schedule is arranged by the league and is released about one week prior to the first game. Games will be held at Hoover East, Hoover Central and a to be determined field in Vestavia. Games will be scheduled mostly on weeknights and an occasional Saturday.

4. What times are the games?

A team will have only one game per week, which will be on a week night (try to eliminate weekends). Weeknight games will begin around 6 p.m. for the youngest group. The Junior division would play at 7 p.m. and the Senior Division would play at 8 p.m.

5. When will we practice?

Generally, teams practice 3 times a week during the preseason and twice per week once the games start. Usually 1 1/2 hours per practice. You may practice Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. A team may practice in the pre-season on Fridays, but generally do not practice on Fridays during the season. Please be at all practices, your commitment to the team is important.

6. Where will we practice?

Practice will be at a Field in Vestavia such as the Cahaba Heights' fields, but the final location is to be determined.

7. How much will my son play?

This league requires that all kids on the team have a starting position and participate in a minimum of 50 percent of the action. Positions will be decided by the team's coaching staff. Players that do not show up for practice can have playing time reduced.

8. What equipment does the park provide?

The League provides HELMETS and a GAME JERSEY

9. What equipment must I provide?

You must provide a CHIN STRAP, MOUTHPIECE, SHOULDER PADS, PRACTICE JERSEY, PRACTICE AND GAME PANTS, PANT PADS, ANY ARM PADDING, and SHOES. These may be purchased at any sporting goods store.

10. How are teams chosen?

Players will be evaluated by the coaches during June-July. The league will organize the teams to ensure equal distribution of talent. The coaches will then be assigned a team randomly. This is done so that the league can be competitive and fun for all. No requests for specific coaches are teammates will be allowed.

11. What is the refund policy?

Half the registration fee will be refunded if the player quits prior to the start of practice assuming they return all issued equipment to their coach. Players that quit after the first day of practice will not be refunded their registration fee. The reason for this is outlays for jerseys, insurance and other fees have been paid by this time.

Hand goes Yard ..Dutton hits top of the fence (2 inches)
4/2/2011  10:08:26 PM

Although the Red Sox won against the Yankees. Jonothan Hand hit a center field shot over the fence just clearing the fence.  One inning prior, Wells Dutton hits the top chain link. ...This makes Home Run # 2 in the league for this year one shy of last years record of 3 for the season..
